Waiting on Wednesday (68): All the Rage by Courtney Summers

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 21:30 0 comentarios

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spinethat spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

My pick this week is:

Title: All The Rage
Series: None
Author: Courtney Summers
Release Date: April 14th 2015
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

The sheriff’s son, Kellan Turner, is not the golden boy everyone thinks he is, and Romy Grey knows that for a fact. Because no one wants to believe a girl from the wrong side of town, the truth about him has cost her everything—friends, family, and her community. Branded a liar and bullied relentlessly by a group of kids she used to hang out with, Romy’s only refuge is the diner where she works outside of town. No one knows her name or her past there; she can finally be anonymous. But when a girl with ties to both Romy and Kellan goes missing after a party, and news of him assaulting another girl in a town close by gets out, Romy must decide whether she wants to fight or carry the burden of knowing more girls could get hurt if she doesn’t speak up. Nobody believed her the first time—and they certainly won’t now — but the cost of her silence might be more than she can bear.

With a shocking conclusion and writing that will absolutely knock you out, All the Rage examines the shame and silence inflicted upon young women after an act of sexual violence, forcing us to ask ourselves: In a culture that refuses to protect its young girls, how can they survive?

Why I'm Waiting

  • Courtney Summers is my favorite Contemporary YA author
  • I love mysteries
  • I like how Courtney handles bullying and I'm pretty excited to see how she handles it now

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted at The Broke and The Bookish.  Each week a new top ten list is posted, and to participate all you have to do is fill in YOUR top ten for the list.

Top Ten Books You Recently Added To Your To-Be-Read List

Most of the books I just added to my list are books that I've heard great things about but for some reason or other I haven't bought yet, the newer books are by authors that are new to me or books by some of my favorite authors.

Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman Review

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 18:00 2 comentarios
Title: Shadow Scale
Series: Seraphina #2
Author:Rachel Hartman
Date Published:March 10th 2015

Publisher: Random House Children's Books

Seraphina took the literary world by storm with 8 starred reviews and numerous “Best of” lists. At last, her eagerly awaited sequel has arrived—and with it comes an epic battle between humans and dragons.

The kingdom of Goredd: a world where humans and dragons share life with an uneasy balance, and those few who are both human and dragon must hide the truth. Seraphina is one of these, part girl, part dragon, who is reluctantly drawn into the politics of her world. When war breaks out between the dragons and humans, she must travel the lands to find those like herself—for she has an inexplicable connection to all of them, and together they will be able to fight the dragons in powerful, magical ways.

As Seraphina gathers this motley crew, she is pursued by humans who want to stop her. But the most terrifying is another half dragon, who can creep into people’s minds and take them over. Until now, Seraphina has kept her mind safe from intruders, but that also means she’s held back her own gift. It is time to make a choice: Cling to the safety of her old life, or embrace a powerful new destiny?

*This review contains spoilers*

I really liked book one of the series, this was the problem I only liked it but I didn't love it so it really wasn't a book I re-read every chance I got so after almost three years of waiting I felt very disconnected to the characters and the story. Even though the authors added a little recap of the first book at the beginning and I re-read the first book I still wasn't able to like this books as much I wanted too, the fact that  the pace of the book was incredibly slow didn't help matter at all. The thing that made me take out a full star out of this book was how the author handled Seraphina's relationship status, how can you make her someones Mistress?!?! I mean I never felt anything towards Kiggs, I'm pretty neutral about him, so I can't really say that the deserved Phina and then it turned out that Kigg's cousin/wife is also in love with Phina? How did that help in the story if it's just mentioned at the end of the book.

Again I think I would've liked this book a lot more if it had been published in the traditional year after like most YA do, sure there are a few authors like J. K. Rowling and George R. R. Martin that can take their sweet time with continuing their series but they both had millions of readers, and other media that kept their books and worlds alive (TV, movies, video games), sadly for Hartman she had to compete with other YA authors that were just as good and published their books more quickly, also 2+ years is a lot of time to build up expectations and sadly mines to have been to high.

Monday Book Recommendations (34): Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 21:30 0 comentarios

Monday is the day I choose what new books I’m going to start reading but I have so many books in my To Read Pile that sometimes it’s hard to choose so I have decided that on Monday mornings I’ll recommend some  of  my favorite books.

Title: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Series: Captain Nemo #1
Author: Jules Verne
Date Published: 1870
Publisher: Barnes & Noble

French naturalist Dr. Aronnax embarks on an expedition to hunt down a sea monster, only to discover instead the Nautilus, a remarkable submarine built by the enigmatic Captain Nemo. Together Nemo and Aronnax explore the underwater marvels, undergo a transcendent experience amongst the ruins of Atlantis, and plant a black flag at the South Pole. But Nemo's mission is one of revenge-and his methods coldly efficient.

This was one of the first "Classics" that I ever read, granted I read the illustrated children's version but that was enough to make me love most things Jules Verne wrote.

Feature and Follow (39)

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 21:30 10 comentarios

The Feature and and and Follow is hosted by TWO hosts,  of Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read. Each host will have their own Feature Blog and this way it’ll allow us to show off more new blogs!

Have you ever been to BEA? If not, what's stopping you? If you have, what was your best experience there?

Sadly I've never been able to go to BEA, the main reason is that I live in Mexico and since Mexico City is nowhere near the border I can't drive there so I would have to take a plane and that is pretty expensive, also considering hotels, food and other things I haven't been able to afford it.

Restoration by Ann Aguirre Review

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 18:30 2 comentarios
Title: Restoration
Series: Razorland #2.5
Author: Ann Aguirre
Date Published: October 2013

If you wondered why Fade retreated from Deuce at the end of Outpost, find out in his own words.

This is sadly a very short novella that takes place at the end of of the second book in the series and explains why Fade can't stand Deuce touching him. As usual Ann Aguirre took my heart and stomped all over it while she made me love the world and characters she created even more

*To fully understand this Novella you have to read the first books in the series, other wise the events won't make any sense to you*

Incomplete Reads: Shift-Legacy Hugh Howey

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 21:30 0 comentarios
Title: First Shift-Legacy
Series: Silo #2A
Author:Hugh Howey
Date Published: April 14th 2012
Publisher: Broad Reach Publishing

In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate.

In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event.

At almost the same moment in humanity’s broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Usually when I don't finish a book two things can happen if I didn't read more than half I don't really talk about it on my blog if I read more than half I try to review it, this time I'm following Nikki from "There Were Books Involved" DNF Q & A

Did you really give Shift a chance?

According to my Kindle I read 70% of the book so I think I did.
Have you enjoyed other books of the same genre?

Yes, Post-Apocalyptic books and Dystopias are my favorite genre.
Had you been looking forward to this book in particular? Why?

Not really, at first I thought this was another book by the author instead of the prequel of his series that I was currently reading.

Did you have certain expectations for the book before starting it?
Kind of, this book is the prequel to the "Wool" series so I expected to see how the world I saw in Wool came to be.

What ultimately made you stop reading?
The plot just failed to capture me, I really didn't care about the characters or what was happening to them.
Was there anything you liked about The Lucky Ones?

Yes, it explained how the Silo's were created. I won't say more so there are no spoilers.

Would you read any other books by this author?
Yes, but not any time soon, I think I need a break.
So you DNF’d the book – but would you still recommend it to anyone?
Yeah, this was one of those it's not you it's me kind of situations.

Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver Mini Review

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 18:00 2 comentarios
Title: Vanishing Girls
Series: -
Author:  Lauren Olive
Date Published: March 10th 2015
Publisher: Harper Collins

New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver delivers a gripping story about two sisters inexorably altered by a terrible accident.

Dara and Nick used to be inseparable, but that was before the accident that left Dara's beautiful face scarred and the two sisters totally estranged. When Dara vanishes on her birthday, Nick thinks Dara is just playing around. But another girl, nine-year-old Madeline Snow, has vanished, too, and Nick becomes increasingly convinced that the two disappearances are linked. Now Nick has to find her sister, before it's too late.

In this edgy and compelling novel, Lauren Oliver creates a world of intrigue, loss, and suspicion as two sisters search to find themselves, and each other.

This book will certainly leave you feeling confused, I can tell you that I really enjoyed reading it but at the same time it left me feeling very sad. I feel the book captures the sibling dynamic beautifully, I understood both Dara and Nick, usually books that have siblings make me like one and not like the other but in Vanishing Girls I love how real the sisters felt to me.
Basically this books showcases why Lauren Oliver is one of my favorite YA authors.

My pick this week is:

Title: I am Her Revenge
Series: Standalone
Author: Meredith Moore

Publisher:

She can be anyone you want her to be.
Vivian was raised with one purpose in life: to exact revenge on behalf of her mother. Manipulative and cruel, Mother has deprived Vivian not only of a childhood, but of an original identity. With an endless arsenal of enticing personalities at her disposal, Vivian is a veritable weapon of deception.

And she can destroy anyone.
When it’s time to strike, she enrolls in a boarding school on the English moors, where she will zero in on her target: sweet and innocent Ben, the son of the man who broke Mother’s heart twenty years ago.

Anyone… except for the woman who created her.
With every secret she uncovers, Vivian comes one step closer to learning who she really is. But the more she learns about herself, the more dangerous this cat and mouse game becomes. Because Mother will stop at nothing to make sure the truth dies with her.

Why Im waiting:

  • I love stories that have schemers in them
  • Boarding school on England?? Eight year old me is screaming
  • Although in real life manipulators suck it's always interesting to read about them.

Death Marked by Leah Cypess Mini Review

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 18:00 0 comentarios
Title: Death Marked
Series: Death Sworn #2
Author: Leah Cypess
Date Published: March 3rd 2015

Publisher: Greenwillow Books

A young sorceress’s entire life has been shaped to destroy the empire controlling her world. But if everything she knows is a lie, will she even want to fulfill her destiny? The sequel to Death Sworn is just as full of magic and surprising revelations, and will thrill fans of Leigh Bardugo and Robin LaFevers.

At seventeen, Ileni lost her magical power and was exiled to the hidden caves of the assassins. She never thought she would survive long. But she discovered she was always meant to end up, powerless, in the caves as part of an elder sorcerer’s plan to destroy the evil Empire they'd battled so long. Except that Ileni is not an assassin, and she doesn't want to be a weapon. And, after everything, she’s not even sure she knows the truth. Now, at the very heart of the Empire—its academy for sorcerers—the truth is what she seeks. What she finds challenges every belief she holds dear—and it threatens her fledgling romance with the young master of assassins.

Leah Cypess spins an intricate and beautiful conclusion to Ileni's story. In the end, it may not be the epic decisions that bring down an empire, but the small ones that pierce the heart.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as  I thought I would, the main reason is that there was hardly no  Sorin, in book one he was a pretty interesting because he was an Assassin , I hate it when in a book series the first book makes me fall in love with the characters only to introduce me to a bunch of new ones in the next book, it would have been ok if there was going to be a third book but since it's a duology  I won't get to see them again.
