Waiting on Wednesday (21)

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 7:50 4 comentarios

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week the book I'm waiting on is:

Title: The one
Series: The Selection
Author: Kiera Cass
Pages: 352
Publisher: Harper Teen
Expected Release Date: May 6th 2014

The Selection changed the lives of thirty-five girls forever. And now, the time has come for one winner to be chosen.

America never dreamed she would find herself anywhere close to the crown—or to Prince Maxon's heart. But as the competition approaches its end and the threats outside the palace walls grow more vicious, America realizes just how much she stands to lose—and how hard she'll have to fight for the future she wants.

From the very first page of The Selection, this #1 New York Times bestselling series has captured readers' hearts and swept them away on a captivating journey... Now, in The One, Kiera Cass delivers a satisfying and unforgettable conclusion that will keep readers sighing over this electrifying fairy-tale long after the final page is turned.

I loved The Selection but The Elite was a huge trainwreck at least for me, so I'm praying to the Gods of my favorite goods to make this at least a decent ending to this series.

Blog Tour Sanctuary by Pauline Creeden+ Giveaway

Publicado por Lina Jiménez en 5:00 0 comentarios

Summary from Goodreads:
In a heart-racing thriller described as Falling Skies meets The Walking Dead, Jennie struggles to find a safe place for what’s left of her family. But it seems as though there is no place sacred, no place secure. First the aliens attacked the sun, making it dimmer, weaker, and half what it used to be.

Then they attacked the water supply, killing one-third of Earth’s population with a bitter contaminate. And when they unleash a new terror on humankind, the victims will wish for death, but will not find it…When the world shatters to pieces around her, will Jennie find the strength she needs to keep going?
Title:Sanctuary
Author: Pauline Creeden
Release Date: 09/10/13

My Review

When the Aliens decide it’s time to invade us so they do it the smart way and poison the one thing we can’t live without: Water!!. Sanctuary shows us perfectly how people will react when faced with danger and I found the way the author wrote it was very realistic.
Let’s start with the things I liked about the book:
-The way earth was being invaded was very intelligent not your usual random attack in major cities of the world but an attack on something that we can only live without for about a week. You could tell the author put a lot of thought on how we were going to be invaded.
-Jennie and Mickey. I love how their relationship was portrayed and even though there was a significant age gap between them they were caring and loving with each other.
-Hugh our smart and gentlemanly hero. Many heroes are only there to be tough and physically strong but Hugh also brought bravery and brains to the table and he never hesitated to help. Overall a very decent guy, although he is not perfect and brooding but a completely human guy.
-Brad, Hugh’s brother and the human “villain” early on we see he  has some younger sibling issues and unlike Hugh that always tries to help Brad only looks out for himself and you know what I completely loved that about him because it shows human nature perfectly.
Now for the things I didn’t enjoy so much
-Although the book told us Jennie was a college student she felt more like a high school student, or at least that’s the vibe I got from reading her point of view.
-When it was discovered that faith acted as a shield against the infected no one seemed to question it, if they had discovered it while traveling only with the pastor it would have made more sense but they discovered it in a military base I expected the soldiers to be a bit more skeptical about the idea.
I would like to note that I’m not sure if this book can be considered Christian fiction or not, if it’s Christian fiction it is wonderfully written since it incorporates science and faith wonderfully. Another of my worries is that the ending seemed a bit rushed and I’m not sure if the book is part of a series or a standalone. But all things considered Sanctuary is a very solid read.

Review Unforgotten by Jessica Brody

Title: Unforgotten
Series: Unremembered #2
Author Jessica Brody
Pages: 416 pages
Published: February 25th 2014
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Some memories are better left forgotten...

After a daring escape from the scientists at Diotech who created her, Seraphina believes she is finally safe from the horrors of her past. But new threats await Sera and her boyfriend, Zen, at every turn as Zen falls prey to a mysterious illness and Sera’s extraordinary abilities make it more and more difficult to stay hidden. Meanwhile, Diotech has developed a dangerous new weapon designed to apprehend her. A weapon that even Sera will be powerless to stop. Her only hope of saving Zen’s life and defeating the company that made her is a secret buried deep within her mind. A secret that Diotech will kill to protect. And it won’t stay forgotten for long.

Packed with mystery, suspense, and romance, this riveting second installment of Jessica Brody’s Unremembered trilogy delivers more heart-pounding action as loyalties are tested, love becomes a weapon, and no one’s memories are safe.

*Warning this review may contain some spoilers if you have not read Unremembered or Unforgotten *

Although Unremembered was not my favorite book of 2013 it was good enough to make me want to read and pre-order the second book after all super humans and time travel sounds like an excellent premise, how naïve of me.

The story actually had a pretty good start; it begins one week after the events of the first book with Sera and Zen living as country famers in the year 1609 in England. Obviously going back a few centuries is difficult for anyone especially if the only life you know is living in a high tech lab and it’s even more if you were created there. This was actually my favorite part of the book very interesting and genuine it sets an excellent pace and you think you are going to read an excellent book but sadly Zen gets sick and the only cure is in the future so to save him.

Pros of the book:

  • The part of the book that happens in 1609 it was by far my favorite and I wish it had been longer.
  • Zen helping Sera fight her programming and not going all macho I will protect you no need to know how to defend yourself, so nice to see young men portrayed like that.
  • Cody: my favorite character of the series so far and I loved how he grew up to have a good and fulfilling adult life. Nice character growth

And now for the Cons:

  • It dragged too much, there were parts I skipped pages and Sera was still in the same thread of thought. I would have made the book about 100 pages shorter.
  • Kaelen: using a perfectly interesting new character as an element in a love triangle??? It wasn’t necessary for Kaelen to be Seraphina’s perfect match he could just have been a counterpart to her or a newer version or something not her genetically programmed life partner just no. And what kind of name s is Kaelen?
  • It was made perfectly clear in the first book that Seraphina is the most beautiful person ever, after all everyone that met her in the  book said so, I got the point there was no need to keep people telling me how beautiful she is in the second book I get the message nobody compares all hail Seraphina’s beauty

As you can see I didn’t enjoy this book very much it was pretty forgettable and clearly suffers from second book syndrome but I am going to read the third book just to get closure and because the other books that I’ve read by Jessica Brody had good endings so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the series will have a good ending.

Final rating 1.5/5

“Then allow me to do the honors,” Dimas said, easing my backpack from my grip.
What? Was he going to search me? My pulse quickened, and I managed to speak regardless of the tightness in my throat. “Sure.” I closed my mouth after I realized that I had just agreed to allow him to touch me. What the hell was wrong with me? He’d find the tracker. There was no way I could hide it.
“Yes, sir,” Karpos said, returning to the command station
My legs tensed as I extended my arms, assuming the search position.
“Relax,” Dimas spoke softly into my ear. “I am not going to hurt you.”
Every muscle weakened, turning me into bowl of Jell-O. It would take all of my inner strength to keep me upright for his interrogation. “You promise?”
He didn’t speak but chuckled deep in his throat. His laughter made me cringe, but it was his touch that had me flinching when he rested his palms on my back. In a slow, gentle movement, he glided his hands along my curves, kneading my muscles with a surprisingly tender touch. I hated that it felt so good, because I wasn’t supposed to enjoy it.

He moved his hands in front of me, drawing me closer to his body. For a moment, I wanted to flee, but something kept me frozen in place. In a fast movement, he swept his fingers above my breasts, over my shoulders, and then down my arms. He rested his palms on my stomach, and the sheer warmth of his skin seeped through my thin scrubs, searing my frigid flesh to a sizzling one hundred and ten degrees.

His fingers spread across my abdomen and along my sides, stopping at my waist. My heart beat wildly, and I had trouble determining if it was from the fear of being caught with the tracker or from the body search. He lingered inches from my pocket, where I secretly hid the device.
“Turn around,” he ordered, as he pivoted my body between his stout arms.
“Yes, sir.” I rotated like a ballerina in a jewelry box, twirling at her master’s command. Our eyes met once again, igniting a spark that I knew spelled trouble. Anticipation mixed with fear, reducing my mind to a poisonous cocktail. And then I recognized it. That same mind-numbing sensation I experienced when I visited in his quarters. I wanted to stop it, but it was too late. I had already tasted our strange but exciting connection, and now I wanted more.
Because he made me feel alive.

The proximity of his body to mine was overwhelming, and my heart raced as I longed for him to finish. With his gaze fixed on mine, his hands glided over my scrubs, tracing the outline of my curves. I nearly collapsed when his fingers worked their way up my inner calves to my thighs, and I recoiled when he paused briefly on the tracker in my pocket. I braced myself, preparing for the worst, but relaxed when a smile played at the edge of his lips. Instead of demanding that I remove the device, he simply did nothing.

“You can lower your arms,” Dimas said, handing me my backpack.
“Oh, okay.” I stammered, still shocked that he ignored the tracker. He had me totally confused. Did he want me to have it? Maybe he didn’t feel it. No, he did. I know he did. Or did he want me out of there so bad that he was willing to overlook what I had taken? Thoughts ran rampant, making me a hot mess, once again.
